Building for the Future: Net Zero, EnerQuality & Low Impact Development

Posted by on in Sean Homes 101

I’m all about building sustainable communities with effective designs and green living. I’m very proud of the homes we built in Barrie for Phase 1 of my townhome community. They’ve got some very cool energy-saving features. Let’s take a look at three of the key ones:

Net Zero Energy

Four of the Sean homes in Barrie are net zero ready. Net zero energy homes are homes that generate at least as much clean energy as they use on a yearly basis. The homes must be super efficient to qualify. They’re airtight with increased insulation, high-efficiency appliances and LED lighting fixtures, space and water heating systems with efficient heat pumps, and electrical systems that are able to accommodate rooftop solar panels.

Every single Sean home has reached, at minimum, 25% greater energy efficiency than Ontario Building Code requirements, and 58% of the homes are at the high level that the Ontario Power Authority sets as a target through its Savings By Design program.

These more efficient buildings save 2.0-2.5 tons of greenhouses gas emission each per year (for these homes, this is equivalent to approximately what a 50 acre forest would absorb per year) and save the equivalent of $50,000 worth of gasoline - over a tanker truck's worth! - or approximately 100,000 lbs of coal per year.

As a founding member of the Canadian Home Builder Association’s Net Zero Energy Housing Council, I’m excited to build these innovative homes. I expect this to soon become the standard of new housing construction. We’re working on more cost-effective construction methods and homeowner education.

EnerQuality Ratings

The Sean townhomes in Barrie are all green. They’re ENERGY STAR qualified: they’re smart homes that are better for you and the environment. My homes have EnerQuality ratings of 84, 85 and 86 (100 represents net zero energy). They’re airtight and energy-efficient, with extra insulation, efficient systems and ENERGY STAR appliances. This gives your family comfort and peace of mind, saves money on energy bills and is good for the environment.

Low Impact Development

The entire Barrie site is operating with LID (low impact development). This is a storm water management technique that uses landscaping at the lot level to filter, store, evaporate and detain runoff water. It controls water in a natural way, and prevents flooding and stream bank erosion. It requires careful design and consideration to soil, vegetation and drainage patterns.

We’re changing the way we build communities. If you’d like to follow along, sign up now for the latest Phase of Sean in Barrie, coming this Spring.
