Piezoelectricity: A Viable Source Of Alternate Energy I’ve talked in the past about various methods of energy conservation, but wanted to spend some time highlighting a humble and virtually ignored green energy source: piezoelectricity. Simply put, it’s the process of converting mechanical strain (such as human motion or vibration) into electric current or voltage. A recent study found that piezoelectric energy could produce electricity at between $0.08-$0.20 per kilowatt-hour, making it cheaper than almost all current technologies, including rooftop solar. Although it’s still considered an emerging technology, there are plenty of examples that illustrate the exciting possibilities this energy source presents. It’s exciting stuff!

Artificial Intelligence Is Coming To A Home Near You

Artificial intelligence is the staple of any and every sci-fi film. An omnipresent voice is constantly available to answer the calls of protagonists and villains alike – providing whatever service or knowledge they require. This futuristic concept is already available on the marketplace to varying degrees. Products like Apple’s Siri, for example, can respond to and act on requests from users, but new technology is upping the ante and bringing full, immersive, intelligent AI solutions into to your home. A few products that are coming down the pipeline include EmoSPARK, Jibo and Amazon Echo.

8 BILD Nominations When I set out to build my new community, I did so with the goal of creating energy efficient homes that would set a new standard in the city of Barrie. If you’ve been following my blog, you already know some of the elements I’ve included in my development, such as: high performance heating ventilation system, filters, low VOC materials, rain barrels, tighter construction, and more efficient appliances amongst other things. I wanted to make a clean, fresh and overall better life for you and your family – and with well over 90% of first release sold, it’s apparent that my vision resonated with homebuyers in Barrie.

Innovative Kickstarter Campaigns Have you been on Kickstarter? Well if you’re not familiar with it, it’s a crowdsourcing platform that allows people – like you – to help fund ground breaking products, technologies, films, etc. Some of the more notable Kickstarter successes of the past few years have included Reading Rainbow and Pebble watches. What I find most interesting though, is the amount of intelligent, energy efficient products and initiatives that exist on the platform. I’ve told you about some great smart lighting solutions in the past, all of which originated through crowdsourcing, but I thought it might be interesting to share with you some of the recently funded projects that I think are pushing the envelope.

Combating Health Issues Through Intelligent Infrastructure There’s a saying – “at least you have your health”; however this isn’t something we should take for granted. It’s no secret that Canadians have become far less active than they used to be. Many health issues can be curbed by a combination of physical activity and smarter choices with the products we use, and how we consume energy in our homes.

Energy Efficiency: The Fifth (And Most Important) Fuel When it comes to the topic of energy/fuels, people often discuss the big four – wind, solar, fossil and nuclear. Wind and solar specifically are consider the “sexier” topics in any debate on resources. However, there is another fuel that also happens to be the cheapest of all. That fuel is energy efficiency, which is essentially the way in which we manage, store and distribute the energy that is available to us.

Green Building Trends For 2015 According to a survey conducted by TD, of Canadians who are willing to pay a premium on environmentally friendly homes, 77% say that cost savings on energy bills is a main motivation (compared to 65% in 2008). As you know, I believe it’s of the upmost importance to make healthy and efficient homes for families (just like yours). With the New Year approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to take a look at some of the eco-building trends currently being forecasted for 2015 – the ones that homebuyers are demanding for their new homes.

Winter Is Coming – And There’s Nothing To Fear It’s no secret I love Barrie. I think it’s the best city in the world – and I couldn’t imagine Sean Homes building its first community of smart towns anywhere else. With the snow starting to pile up, it’s got me thinking about all the things I love about Barrie in the winter. Sure you can stay inside and wait for it to melt, roughly four or five months from now, or you can get out there and make the most of it! Here are a few of the things that come to mind.

Smart-Home Security For Your Family Let’s face it, nothing is more important than the safety of your home and your family. How you choose to protect your home becomes a daunting task for some – there are many well-known brands such as ADT, and many smaller brands that offer a cornucopia of solutions. The way you choose to secure what matters most can even have repercussions on your insurance premiums, as well as legal implications (in the case of some environmental monitoring). Recently we’ve seen many new players in the smart home security market. These new players are making it even easier for homeowners to automate their home security, while monitoring everything from lights, energy consumption and home locks. Here are three of the latest products on the market that you may want to consider for your family.

The Product Of Cooperation

The evolution of Sean Homes thus far has been a journey that I’m extremely proud of. From conceptualization to preview opening, there have been many challenges I’ve faced – such as my re-zoning efforts over the summer – which have all been overcome. Sean Homes is all about forward-thinking development, and this type of development can only be achieved with the buy-in and cooperation from multiple stakeholders. I’ve committed myself to building a pedestrian-friendly, healthy, active community in the heart of Barrie, and I’m excited (and thankful) that this will become a reality. I’ve always said that if builders and municipal agencies work together instead of at opposite sides of the table we can build better homes for the people who really matter – the people who live there.

Low VOC materials are changing the way we build new houses As I often state, the environment is a big deal to me – because a green home is a better, healthier home for you and your family. I extend this philosophy to the actual construction of the home, as I’ve alluded to in the past. Aside from lowering energy consumption, and aiding in your families water conservation efforts, I also use alternative building materials with lower VOC levels whenever I can. VOC is short for volatile organic compounds, which are carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature.

Lowering Water Consumption – Saving Money and the Environment Canadian water use has grown by 25% over the past two decades, and shows no sign of stopping any time soon as our population continues to swell. The Great Lakes – the planet's largest continuous body of fresh water – faces a growing demand from industry, power plants, farms and urban sprawl. Considering that less than 1% of the planet’s water supply is available for human use, water consumption/conservation is becoming an extremely important issue – because what each of us does in the world can make a difference.

Intensification -The Future of Barrie’s Development The City of Barrie has lofty plans to develop on the ‘annexed’ Innisfil land immediately south of the city – but there is one hitch. Before the city is allowed access to land, it must increase its population by 40%, as per the Provincial Growth Plan. The Growth Plan sets out minimum density targets of between 150 and 400 residents and jobs combined per hectare for each urban growth centre that must be met by 2031. In this case, a population of 210,000 and the employment of 101,000 people is what Barrie needs to achieve.
